How to prepare for PL-300 in 8 weeks
Published 19 September 2026
Eight weeks at one to two hours a day is enough for PL-300 if the time is spent in the right order. Most people lose weeks deciding what to study next, not studying. This plan removes that decision.
Before you start
Install Power BI Desktop and keep it open through the whole plan. Reading about Power BI and using Power BI produce very different exam results, because most questions describe a situation and ask what you would do.
Read Microsoft's official study guide for the exam once, early. It lists the skill areas being measured, and those were last updated on 20 April 2026, so anything older than that may describe an outdated exam.
Weeks 1–4: learn the concepts
Work through the official PL-300 learning path on Microsoft Learn, module by module, without skipping. Four areas need to be solid by the end of week four:
Preparing data
Connecting to sources, cleaning and shaping in Power Query, handling errors and data types. Practise on a messy CSV of your own rather than only the sample files.
Modelling data
Relationships, cardinality, star schema, and DAX. Filter context versus row context is where most candidates lose marks, so spend extra time there. If you can explain out loud why a measure returns a different number in two visuals, you understand it.
Visualising and analysing
Choosing the right visual, formatting, interactions, bookmarks, and reading results correctly. The exam often asks which visual answers a specific business question.
Managing and securing
Workspaces, roles, row-level security, scheduled refresh and deployment. This is the area people underestimate because it isn't the fun part, and it appears more often than they expect.
Weeks 5–6: practise under exam conditions
Move to practice questions. The goal is not a high score, it is a list of your weak topics. Keep a page where you write every question you got wrong and why, then go back to the relevant Learn module for that topic only.
Repeat the same question set after a few days. If you get the same type wrong twice, that topic needs a full revision, not another attempt.
Week 7: revise the gaps
By now you have a list of weak areas. Spend this week only on them. Rebuild a small report from scratch touching each weak topic, because building it once teaches more than re-reading it three times.
Week 8: exam readiness
Take Microsoft's free practice assessment, available from the official certification page, in one sitting and timed. Then review every wrong answer. If you are scoring comfortably above the pass mark on a timed run, book the exam. If not, give yourself one extra week rather than sitting it unprepared.
How to know you're ready
- You can build a report from a raw file to a finished dashboard without looking up steps
- You can explain why a DAX measure behaves differently in two contexts
- You can answer scenario questions without re-reading them three times
- You are finishing timed practice sets with time to spare
Common reasons people fail
Watching videos passively without building anything. Skipping the managing and securing area. Practising only multiple-choice questions and being surprised by case studies. And starting practice questions in week one, before the concepts are in place, which turns preparation into guesswork.
