PL-300 exam format: passing score, cost, questions and what to expect in 2026

Published 19 September 2026 · Updated 14 October 2026

If you are planning to take the Microsoft PL-300 (Power BI Data Analyst) exam, the questions you probably have first are practical ones. How long is it? What is the passing score? What does it cost? How many questions will you face? This guide answers all of that in one place, then goes further into how the exam is built, how scoring works and how to spend your 100 minutes well.

Everything here is based on Microsoft's public PL-300 study guide, with the skills measured as updated on 20 April 2026. Where something is not officially published, such as the exact question count, we say so clearly. Exam details can change, so use this page to understand the shape of the exam and confirm anything that costs money on the official certification page.

PL-300 skills measured 2026: the four domains

The exam is built from four skill areas. Three of them carry equal, large weights, which means you cannot get away with being strong in just one. The weights below are ranges, so the exact split on your exam can differ.

DomainWeightIn plain words
Prepare the data25–30%Connect to sources, clean and reshape data in Power Query
Model the data25–30%Build relationships, write DAX, tune performance
Visualize and analyze the data25–30%Build reports, tell a story, find patterns
Manage and secure Power BI15–20%Workspaces, sharing, refresh, row-level security

The official wording is dense, so here is what each sub-skill actually means. For the complete list, read the Microsoft study guide.

Prepare the data (25–30%)

  • Get or connect to data. Pick a source, enter credentials, set privacy levels, use a shared semantic model, and decide between DirectLake, DirectQuery and Import. Know when each one fits and use parameters to make connections flexible.
  • Profile and clean data. Use column quality, distribution and profile statistics to spot nulls, errors and inconsistent values, and know how to fix import errors.
  • Transform and load data. Set data types, create and split columns, group and aggregate, pivot and unpivot, and turn semi-structured data such as JSON into tables. Shape data into fact and dimension tables, understand reference versus duplicate queries, merge and append, and make sure keys are ready for relationships.

Model the data (25–30%)

  • Design and implement a model. Set table and column properties, handle role-playing dimensions, choose cardinality and cross-filter direction, build a common date table, and know when to use a calculated column versus a calculated table.
  • Create model calculations with DAX. Write simple aggregation measures, use CALCULATE, time intelligence, basic statistical functions and semi-additive measures, use quick measures, and know what calculation groups are for.
  • Optimize model performance. Remove unneeded rows and columns, reduce granularity, and diagnose slowness with Performance Analyzer and DAX query view.

Visualize and analyze the data (25–30%)

  • Create reports. Choose the right visual, format it, apply themes and conditional formatting, use slicers and filters, and decide when a paginated report is the better tool. This area includes visual calculations and several Copilot tasks, such as creating a narrative visual, a report page or suggested content.
  • Enhance usability and storytelling. Bookmarks, custom tooltips, visual interactions, drillthrough, sync slicers, the Selection pane, sorting, navigation, mobile layout, accessibility, export settings, personalization and automatic page refresh.
  • Identify patterns and trends. The Analyze feature, grouping, binning and clustering, AI visuals, reference lines, error bars, forecasting, outliers and anomalies, and using Copilot to summarize a semantic model.

Manage and secure Power BI (15–20%)

  • Manage workspaces and assets. Create and configure workspaces and apps, publish and update content, choose a distribution method, set subscriptions and data alerts, promote or certify content, know when a gateway is required, and schedule refresh.
  • Secure and govern. Workspace roles, item-level access, access to semantic models, row-level security (RLS) roles and group membership, and sensitivity labels.

PL-300 number of questions and question types

Microsoft does not publish how many questions you will get, and the count can vary between candidates. People commonly report roughly 40 to 60 questions including case studies, but treat that as unofficial. Plan around the 100 minutes instead.

The exam can include several formats, and some sections may not let you go back to earlier questions. That is why you should know each format before you sit. The examples below are our own illustrative questions, made up to show the style. They are not real exam questions.

Multiple choice

One correct answer from several options. Illustrative example: a column of order dates imports as text. Which Power Query action converts it so it can be used in a date hierarchy? (A) Change the column data type to Date. (B) Add a custom column that duplicates it. (C) Create a calculated table. (D) Set the sort-by column. The answer is A, because the fix belongs in the data type step.

Multiple select

Two or more correct answers, and the question tells you how many. Illustrative example: which two actions reduce the size of a model? Remove columns that no report uses. Keep every column in case it is needed later. Remove rows outside the reporting period. Add more calculated columns. The correct choices are the first and third.

Drag-and-drop and ordering

You arrange items into the correct order or match items to targets. Illustrative example: put these steps in order to restrict each sales manager to their own region: create a role with a table filter, test the role with View as, publish the report, assign users or groups to the role in the service.

Build list

You pick the right actions from a longer list and place them in sequence. Illustrative example: you need to combine monthly files from a folder. Select only the needed steps from a list and order them: connect to the folder, combine the files, check data types, remove unneeded columns, load the result.

Hot area and drop-down completion

You complete a statement by choosing from drop-downs, or by clicking the correct area. Illustrative example: a measure needs to ignore the current filter on a date table. You complete the blank in this snippet from a list that includes CALCULATE, SUM, ALL and FILTER:

Total Sales All Dates =
[ ? ]( SUM( Sales[Amount] ), [ ? ]( 'Date' ) )

The expected pair is CALCULATE and ALL. These questions test whether you can read DAX, not just write it from scratch.

Case studies and how to approach them

A case study gives you a business scenario, often with tables, requirements and constraints, followed by several linked questions. They look intimidating but are manageable with a routine.

  1. Read the scenario once, fully, before the questions. Note the business goal, the data sources, the users and any constraint such as a licence, a refresh limit or a security requirement.
  2. Look for the deciding detail. The correct answer usually follows from a stated requirement, not from general Power BI knowledge. If the scenario says the data must always be current, that points to a different connection mode than "a few thousand rows refreshed daily".
  3. Answer in order, but do not over-invest. Answer them together to save time.

PL-300 passing score: why 700 is not 70%

Microsoft exams are scored from 1 to 1,000, and you need 700 or above to pass. The score is scaled. Different versions of an exam can have different difficulty, and scaling is how Microsoft keeps the pass standard consistent. Questions can also carry different weight.

That has three practical consequences:

  • 700 does not mean 70% of questions correct, so do not try to calculate your result mid-exam.
  • Some items may be unscored and used to evaluate future questions. You will not be told which ones, so treat every question as if it counts.
  • Unanswered questions are not worth anything, so answer everything, even if your best answer is an educated guess.

When you do practice tests, do not obsess over a raw percentage. Look at which domains you miss. A steady pattern of misses in one area tells you more than the headline score.

PL-300 exam duration and a time plan for 100 minutes

The PL-300 exam duration is 100 minutes of testing time. With roughly 40 to 60 questions (unofficial), that works out to a little under two to two and a half minutes per question on average, but the spread is wide: a simple multiple-choice item may take 30 seconds, and a case study may take 15 minutes. Here is a plan you can adapt.

PhaseTimeWhat to do
First passAbout 60–65 minAnswer what you know. Mark anything that takes longer than about two minutes and move on
Case studiesAbout 20–25 minRead the scenario once, answer all linked questions together
ReviewAbout 10–15 minReturn to marked questions, reread the wording, change an answer only when you have a clear reason

Keep in mind that some sections may not allow you to go back, so the order of the exam can shape how you use the plan. Read the instructions at the start of each section. Also leave a small buffer: if you reach the last five minutes with blanks, fill them in.

When you are stuck, eliminate clearly wrong options, then choose between the rest using the stated requirement. Words like "minimize" and "must" often decide between two valid answers.

Online proctored vs test centre

You can usually choose between sitting the exam at a Pearson VUE test centre or taking it online from home or an office. Choose based on your situation.

FactorOnline proctoredTest centre
ConvenienceNo travel, flexible slotsTravel required, fixed locations
EnvironmentYou must control your roomProvided for you
Technical riskYour internet and webcam matterEquipment is managed by the centre
Check-inSystem test, photos of ID and roomID check on arrival

The following is general guidance only. Pearson VUE and Microsoft set the actual rules and update them, so read the current requirements before exam day.

  • ID. Bring valid, government-issued photo ID, and make sure the name on it matches the name on your certification profile. A mismatch is one of the most common avoidable problems.
  • Room. For an online exam expect a quiet, private room with a clear desk, shown on camera.
  • Items. Phones, notes, extra screens, headphones and other devices are generally not allowed. Follow the written rules you are given.
  • Check-in. Run the system test in advance on the same computer and network you will use, and log in early to complete check-in.

Rules differ by country and provider and can change. Read the current Pearson VUE and Microsoft candidate rules before booking, not the night before.

The exam sandbox: try the interface first

Microsoft offers a free exam sandbox that lets you click through the exam interface and try the question formats. It does not teach content. Its value is familiarity: you learn how drag-and-drop works, how to mark a question for review and how case study screens are laid out.

For content practice, use Microsoft's free practice assessment, which gives you a feel for the style and tells you which topics need more work. Our guide to free PL-300 resources lists these official tools and others in one place.

PL-300 retake policy

If you do not pass, you can retake the exam, but there are waiting periods. The current rules, which you should confirm on Microsoft Learn, are:

  • Wait 24 hours after a first failed attempt.
  • Wait 14 days between later attempts.
  • A maximum of 5 attempts in 12 months.
  • Each retake is a new paid attempt.

Do not treat the 24-hour rule as a reason to retake the next day. Your score report breaks down performance by skill area. Use it to find the domain that let you down, study that area with hands-on practice, then rebook.

PL-300 exam cost

The PL-300 exam cost varies by country. It is about USD 165 in the United States, and lower in India and many other countries. We do not quote an exact figure for your country because it depends on local pricing and taxes. Check the price on the Microsoft booking page when you schedule.

Because every retake is paid, spending a few extra days on hands-on practice is usually cheaper than rushing.

PL-300 renewal

The Power BI Data Analyst Associate certification is valid for 12 months. To keep it, you complete a free renewal assessment online on Microsoft Learn. The assessment opens about six months before your certification expires, so you have a long window. It is not proctored, and you can retry if you do not pass the first time.

Is PL-300 hard? An honest answer by background

PL-300 is an associate-level exam. It is not a trick exam, and it is not trivial either. How hard it feels depends on what you already do.

  • You use Power BI at work. Likely moderate. You will still need to study areas you rarely touch, such as security, workspaces and some DAX patterns.
  • You know Excel well but are new to Power BI. Moderate to hard. Power Query and the data model are the big shift, and DAX needs real practice, not just reading.
  • You come from SQL or a BI tool. Moderate. Modelling concepts will feel familiar, but Power BI specifics, DAX filter context and the service side need time.
  • You are a complete beginner to data. Hard, but achievable with a longer runway. Start with the fundamentals before you attempt practice tests.

The two areas that most often cause trouble are DAX filter context and understanding relationships. A small example shows why hands-on work matters:

Sales LY =
CALCULATE(
    [Total Sales],
    SAMEPERIODLASTYEAR( 'Date'[Date] )
)

The syntax above is easy to memorise, but the exam asks whether you understand why it needs a proper date table with continuous dates, and what happens if it does not have one. That is the difference between recognising and understanding. If you want a week-by-week structure, our 8-week PL-300 study plan lays it out.

What changed in 2026

Microsoft updated the PL-300 skills measured on 20 April 2026. The changes were minor, and most questions still cover generally available features. The updates worth knowing about:

  • Copilot tasks. The outline now includes Copilot-related items, such as creating a narrative visual, creating a report page, suggesting report content and summarizing a semantic model. Know what these tools do and where they fit, but remember the bulk of the exam is still core Power BI.
  • DirectLake option. When choosing a storage mode, the outline now lists DirectLake alongside DirectQuery and Import. Understand the trade-offs at a conceptual level.

A note on exam dumps

You will see websites offering "real exam questions" or braindumps. Avoid them. Microsoft's exam policies treat using leaked content as a violation, and the consequences can include a cancelled result or a revoked certification. Dump questions are also often outdated or wrong. Practice with original questions that come with explanations, and learn from your mistakes instead.

One mention of what we offer, since it fits here: the PL-300 Preparation Bundle contains an 8-week roadmap, the study links in order and a practice Q&A PDF with original questions and explanations. The Udemy practice-test course in the roadmap is a separate paid purchase and is not included. See the bundle if it suits you; the free resources work well too.

Exam-day checklist and common mistakes

  • Confirm your booking time and ID the day before.
  • Run the system test (online) or plan your route (test centre).
  • Mark and move on when stuck; do not burn five minutes on one question.
  • Answer every question before time runs out.

Common mistakes include practising only multiple choice, ignoring security and workspace topics because they feel less exciting, memorising answers instead of building a model, and never opening Power BI Desktop in the final fortnight. PL-300 exam format FAQ

What is the PL-300 passing score?

You need 700 or more on a scale of 1 to 1,000. It is a scaled score, so it does not equal 70% of questions answered correctly.

How many questions are on the PL-300 exam?

Microsoft does not publish a fixed number. Candidates commonly report roughly 40 to 60 questions, including case studies, but this is unofficial and varies between sittings.

How long is the PL-300 exam?

The exam is 100 minutes of testing time, proctored, and it may include interactive components. Allow extra time for check-in and for any survey or agreement screens.

How much does the PL-300 exam cost?

The price varies by country. It is about USD 165 in the United States and lower in India and many other countries. Always check the exact fee and any taxes on the Microsoft booking page.

What is the PL-300 retake policy?

After a first failed attempt you wait 24 hours. For later attempts you wait 14 days between each, with a maximum of 5 attempts in 12 months. Every retake is paid. Confirm the current rules on Microsoft Learn.

How does PL-300 renewal work?

The certification is valid for 12 months. You renew for free by passing an online assessment on Microsoft Learn, which opens about six months before expiry. You do not need to retake the proctored exam.

Is PL-300 hard?

It is a fair associate-level exam, but not an easy one. It is hardest for people who have never written DAX or built a data model, and easiest for people who use Power BI at work. Hands-on practice matters more than memorising.

Can I try the exam interface before the real exam?

Yes. Microsoft provides a free exam sandbox so you can try the question types and navigation. Use it once during your preparation so nothing about the interface surprises you.

Where to check the current details

Exam details change. Microsoft's official certification page for PL-300 lists the current skills measured, question types, exam duration and fee for your country, and is the only source worth trusting for those specifics. The skills measured were last updated on 20 April 2026.
